Discovering Salento: Salina dei Monti, a place with wild nature and pink flamingos.
As a homeland distinguished by the excellence of Masseria Capoforte wines, Salento reveals an entire world to explore for an experience that brings pleasure beyond your palate and refreshes your heart. Today we want to help you to discover one of the most delightful and exciting places in this area, the Salina Nature Reserve in Torre Colimena. The reserve acquired its name from the Benedictine Monks who, starting from the year one thousand, converted this area into a salt factory. In fact, sea water settled down in a natural depression beyond the dunes, and thus provided a reserve of what was in the past considered as white gold. Separated from the crystal clear waters by a strip of beach and surrounded by sandy dunes and Mediterranean vegetation, this placid and heavenly place is home of a fauna and flora of unparalleled beauty, so much so that it has been chosen as a "resting area" by the majestic and flamboyant pink flamingos during the migration phases. And it's an extraordinary show to admire them in all their splendour as they launch into the sky and then glide in an elegant manner over the glimmering salt water. So, it’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sea between walks among the wildlife and some bird watching.
